SP 50 2000 Results

Snow Peak 50 Mile Trail Run

The trail conditions were excellent this year, with literally, only about 15 steps of snow compared to over a couple of miles last year and even more the previous 2 years. With a good field of Runners there was a good chance for the record to fall set last year by Karl Meltzer. Chad Ricklefs from Colorado did just that, breaking the record by almost 15 minutes. If it had not been for the temperature being the 80’s it would have been even better. On the women’s side the record of 3 time Winner Deborah Wagner’, fell to another local runner, Ruth Zollinger from Salt Lake City by 52 minutes.

Congratulations again to all of the participants and especially to Betsy Kapilof, of Reno, NV who received The Carolyn Erdman Award. This award is given in special recognition to a Runner who has finished the race against overwhelming personal odds.The Buffalo represents strength, courage and determination. The Arrowhead upon which it stands represents staying on path and reaching it’s mark. Betsy jammed her elbow on a fall and tore some tendons and severally bruised the bone. This happened at about mile 16. She finished the race with her arm in a sling.

This award is so named in Caroylns Honor because of the determination she showed in the 1998 Race after she fell at about the 3 mile mark. She cut her knee open pretty good just below the knee cap. She went on and finished the race in spite of every aid station she went through taping it up, etc and trying to talk her out of going on. Thank you Carolyn for your inspiration.
